The 2020-21 NFL season was proceeding without incident until the Tennessee Titans and the New England Patriots experienced Coronavirus infections among their players and/or staff.

As a result, the NFL has postponed games and has also had to alter games later in the season, which has caused a butterfly effect on the 2020-21 schedule. We’ve previewed the contests occurring on November 26^th, but now those games could be in jeopardy.

At the beginning of the season, NFL betting sites featured lines on all seventeen weeks of the 2020-21 season schedule. Sportsbooks prefer to leave these lines up for the entire year to allow them to collect action until the game begins.

These odds are updated each week to reflect the progress of each team and can offer bettors an advantage if they can correctly predict results several weeks ahead.

NFL sportsbooks have had to remove all future game lines, including odds on their Thanksgiving games, because the schedule is in a state of constant viral-related flux.

It is the goal of oddsmakers to produce attractive game lines that will attract the attention of people that are interested in betting on NFL games, but time is also money, and they are not keen to waste it posting odds on contests that may not occur.

The league will do everything in its power to keep the Thanksgiving Day games intact and unaffected, and it is refreshing to see the amount of preparation the NFL has gone through to get ready for these rescheduling scenarios, but if their occurrence were a certainty, there’d be betting odds on the board right now.

Here are the NFL’s Week 12 games that are currently scheduled to air on November 26^th.

• Houston Texans at Detroit Lions (CBS – 12:30 PM)
• Washington Football Team at Dallas Cowboys (FOX – 4:30 PM)
• Baltimore Ravens at Pittsburgh Steelers (NBC – 8:20 PM)

There’s no need to worry about whether there’ll be pro football on the television while at the in-laws, the NFL has got you covered. Games will occur, and they will be televised.

There is the real possibility that the teams involved could change if the Coronavirus continues to muddle up the remainder of the 2020-21 season schedule.

Let’s be real here. We could care less if the first two games are outright rescheduled. Washington vs. the Dallas Cowboys could have NFC East playoff implications attached, but it is hardly a juicy matchup.

There’s a chance that the Houston Texans or the Detroit Lions could be still be relevant in week twelve, but we doubt it.

Both the Lions and Cowboys host home games on Thanksgiving every year, so if any schedule changes are made, it will likely involve the Texans or Washington having to make an adjustment.

We’re mostly worried about the Pittsburgh Steelers and Baltimore Ravens game that is scheduled to close out the evening. This AFC North rivalry always features hard hits and passionate play, and is the perfect way to close out the Thanksgiving holiday.

At such a late juncture in the season, the AFC North title could be on the line, and we can’t think of a better way to digest belly full of culinary goodness than betting on which team will be victorious.

Normally, we’d suggest making your way to an offshore sportsbook and placing a wager on the Thanksgiving NFL games now, but unfortunately, you may have to wait until the week of the game to lay any action on them.

Nevertheless, two of the three Turkey Day showdowns have announced their midtime acts. Brothers Osborne will play the halftime show for the Detroit Lions and Chicago Bears while Ellie Goulding will take the stage for the Dallas Cowboys and Buffalo Bills.

There has been no word on who will play during the Atlanta Falcons and New Orleans Saints halftime.

The first game of Thanksgiving will be between Chicago and Detroit at 12:30 pm ET. This also means that Brothers Osborne will be the first halftime act of the day. The country music duo is made up of brothers T.J. and John Osborne.

The pair’s first album, Pawn Shop, was certified Gold upon its 2016 release. The next two albums, Port Saint Joe in April 2018 and Live at the Ryman in October 2019, did not fare as well.

A lack of notoriety might do well for Brothers Osborne. Last year, Detroit-native Mike Posner had his halftime show slammed by fans.

The second game of the holiday is between the Bills and Cowboys at 4:30 pm ET. Goulding, a British pop star known for hits like “Lights,” “Burn,” and “Anything Can Happen,” headlines in Dallas.

Goulding had previously threatened to cancel her halftime show due to concerns of the Salvation Army, which kicks off its annual Red Kettle Campaign during the Dallas Thanksgiving game, and their anti-homosexuality stance.

In response, the Salvation Army thanked Goulding for her “shedding light on misconceptions.”

“We’d like to thank Ellie Goulding and her fans for shedding light on misconceptions and encouraging others to learn the truth about The Salvation Army’s mission to serve all, without discrimination. We applaud her for taking the time to learn about the services we provide to the LGBTQ community,” National Commander of The Salvation Army David Hudson said.

As for the Saints-Falcons game, there have been no announcements on the NFC South rivalry Thanksgiving matchup for 2019.

But if this year’s halftime show follows in the footsteps of last year’s, fans could be for another Grambling vs. Southern marching band showdown treat.  

Thankfully, all the top offshore sportsbooks now have odds posted for the three Thanksgiving football games on offer, with the Bears-Lions showdown being the most evenly matched per the betting public. Meanwhile, the Cowboys are getting some (undeserved) seasonal love against the Bills as the Saints look to avenge a surprising recent loss to the Falcons.

The Bears started off the season with deep playoff aspirations, but their season – like so many Thanksgiving leftovers – is basically wrapped up and on ice. At 5-6 and sitting at third in the NFC North behind a pair of 8-3 teams (Packers, Vikings), they’re already playing for next year. Nevertheless, they’re slight favorites in their Thursday afternoon matchup with Detroit.

Of course, the three-win Lions are even worse, sitting beneath the Bears at last place in the division. This contest, slated as the first game of the day, is absolutely the one to miss. And given its 12:30 pm start time (FOX), it’ll be the easiest one to miss, too. Your oven and stovetop, after all, are going to be far more interesting.

Game 2: Buffalo Bills at Dallas Cowboys Odds

The Bills are 8-3, sporting one of the best records in the AFC and poised for a likely wild card berth in the 2019 NFL Playoffs. Further, they’re on a two-game winning streak, and they boast one of the best defenses in the game.

Yet somehow, inexplicably, they’re seven-point underdogs against the 6-5 Dallas Cowboys, who just got stuffed by the Patriots in a snow-covered defensive showdown in Foxborough. While the ‘Boys should still take the NFC East, the 5-6 Eagles are breathing down their necks. And remember, it’s division or bust for America’s Team, as they can’t credibly rely on an NFC wild card this year. And forget about a hot plate – Cowboys head honcho Jason Garrett is on the hottest seat in the NFL.

With both teams out to prove their potential playoff chops, this should be the best game of the day. And for football bettors – especially those assembling a big Thanksgiving parlay – the Bills’ payout is the best value going. If you’re hungry, take Buffalo on that delicious Thanksgiving spread. The game kicks off at 4:30 pm on CBS. 

Game 3: New Orleans Saints at Atlanta Falcons Odds

If you’re still awake after the first two tilts and a bellyful of tryptophan, the Saints-Falcons matchup (8:20 pm, NBC) could be interesting.

The Falcons, at 3-8, actually beat the Saints handily in Week 10, but the Saints are 9-2 and own first place in the NFC South. Further, they’re playing for a first-round bye, while the Falcons are playing for…some reason.

The Saints should cover easily, but Week 10 remains concerning for NFL betting enthusiasts. And that’s the only reason Nola isn’t a double-digit favorite going into Atlanta.  

Both teams have one more game before their Turkey Day showdown. The 4-6 Bears will take on the New York Giants and the 3-6 Lions will play the Washington Redskins.

Four days later, the rivals will meet on November 28 for the Lions’ annual Fat Thursday matchup. Assuming they both win this Sunday, Chicago and Detroit will still both be under .500 come kickoff.

We previously reported that the Atlanta Falcons would be manhandled by the New Orleans Saints and speculated that the Dallas Cowboys were too inconsistent to predict a win over the Buffalo Bills.

But given the disappointments in Detroit and Chicago, the other two games, coupled with a helping of mashed potatoes and gravy, will be welcomed distractions.

Entering the 2019 season, the Bears were expected to turn the corner and compete for a Super Bowl. Going 12-4 under QB Mitchell Trubisky and rookie head coach Matt Nagy in 2018 was just what the team needed to believe in themselves.

Unfortunately, Trubisky is not performing up to expectations and his receivers are not helping. The Bears lead the league in dropped passes so far this season.

As for the Detroit Lions, they are the NFL’s version of canned cranberry sauce: always hanging around but only liked by the older generation. But in their defense, for 2019 at least, franchise QB Matthew Stafford has been out with injuries. 

According to recent reports, Stafford could even be out the remainder of the season. Jeff Driskel has done a decent job filling in under center but the team is already too far gone to make the playoffs this season, especially with the Green Bay Packers (8-2) and Minnesota Vikings (8-3) dominating the top of the division.

As the odds currently stand, the Bears (+15000) and Lions (+50000) have no real shot at winning the Super Bowl this postseason. For a comparison of the entire league, see the list below.

As most football fans know, the NFL schedules its Thanksgiving matchups well ahead of time, doing its best to make sure each game is compelling.

Of course, the teams themselves have the final say, and sometimes, it doesn’t always work out.

One of the reasons the Cowboys are featured every year is because the NFL can count on the popularity of “America’s Team” to garner good ratings no matter what, but other teams are less reliable when it comes to broadcasting clout.

At the beginning of the 2019 NFL campaign, all three matchups looked decent enough, but half a season in and just a month out, the pairings seemed substantially less interesting.  

So, how do the teams look now? Well, let’s take a look at what each one’s bringing to the table.

Chicago Bears at Detroit Lions – 12:30 pm, FOX

When we measured this matchup a month ago, it looked like the Bears would walk all over the Lions. The Bears were 3-3 and looking up, while Detroit was 2-3-1 and looking down. Since then, however, both teams have faltered, each dropping three of their last four contests.  

Now, according to ESPN’s Power Rankings, this looks like the most evenly-matched game on the Thanksgiving buffet, with the Bears – mired in a so-called quarterback controversy – ranked at 20, just one spot ahead of the Lions at 21.

Buffalo Bills at Dallas Cowboys – 4:30 pm, CBS

Despite the Bears-Lions tilt being more competitive on paper, the Bills-Cowboys matchup could prove the most competitive on the field. Both teams are above .500, and both are doing well in their respective divisions.

In other words, both are potentially playoff-bound, and that will make this one the game to watch (if you can actually stay awake after ingesting all that hearty tryptophan).

Still, the Bills have slipped a bit from our last preview, where they were 5-1, going 2-2 in their last four games. The Cowboys, meanwhile, have gone 2-1 in the same time. Plus, Dallas QB Dak Prescott is playing not just for the postseason, but for a giant contract extension, as well. That little bit of added motivation might motivate bettors to punt on the Bills next Thursday.

New Orleans Saints at Atlanta Falcons – 8:20 pm, NBC

This game looked like a stinkeroo in our last roundup, as the Saints were rolling atop the NFC with just a single loss at 6-1, while the Falcons were a basement-dwelling 1-6.

However, the two teams played each other in Week 10, and…

Atlanta won handily, 26-9.

The Falcons followed that up with a 29-3 trouncing of the hapless Carolina Panthers, and they host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers before their Thanksgiving rematch with Nola. Suddenly, that game seems almost…watchable.

That said, most football betting sites are likely going to heavily favor New Orleans in the rematch, as it’s borderline unthinkable that Drew Brees and Company would be bested twice by such an inferior opponent. Expect the Saints to have their fill of Dirty Bird and cover the spread.

As for how bettors see these teams in the bigger picture of 2019 NFL championship futures, the Saints (+600) obviously lead the pack on the odds boards. Of course, as long as Dallas isn’t eliminated, you can expect the Cowboys (+1800) to sit pretty high atop those boards, too. The other Thanksgiving teams, however, don’t appear to figure prominently.

• The Detroit Lions began playing on Thanksgiving in 1934 and have played on every Fat Thursday since, save for 1941-44 during World War II.
• The Dallas Cowboys began Thanksgiving play in 1966. At the time, the Cowboys were still a part of the AFL.
• The Lions have the most wins (37) and the most losses (39) on Thanksgiving. The Cowboys have the second-most wins at 30 and the Green Bay Packers have the second-most losses at 20.
• The Jacksonville Jaguars are the only NFL team to never play on Thanksgiving Day. They shared this distinction with the Carolina Panthers until 2015.

• O.J. Simpson rushes for the most yards in a single Thanksgiving game with 273 against Detroit in 1976.
• Jim Benton sets the Turkey Day receiving record at 303 in 1945.

Gaffs

• After the Cowboys blocked a late-game field goal by the Miami Dolphins in their 1993 showdown, Dallas’s Leon Lett slid into the swatted ball, knocking it forward and making it a live ball. As a result, the Dolphins recovered and made their next field goal to win the game.
• Entering the overtime period of the 1998 Thanksgiving game between Pittsburgh and Detroit, Steelers RB Jerome Bettis called both heads and tails as the coin flip was in the air. The ball was given to Detroit who won on a subsequent field goal. Since the fiasco, teams must choose heads or tails before the toss.
• As one of the most infamous plays in NFL history, QB Mark Sanchez of the New York Jets ran into the back of his own lineman and lost the ball during Thanksgiving 2012. It was subsequently recovered by the New England Patriots for a touchdown. The play became known as the “butt fumble” and is regarded as one of the worst plays in NFL history.

Currently sitting on a 4-3 record, Dallas has four more games until their Thanksgiving matchup with the 5-2 Buffalo Bills.

Like cranberry sauce and stuffing, the Cowboys playing on Thanksgiving Day is a tradition. Since their first Turkey Day showdown in 1966 against the Cleveland Browns, Dallas is 31-19-1 on the holiday.

This record includes last year’s victory when the Cowboys defeated the Washington Redskins 31-23.

So, generally speaking, Dallas has done well on Thanksgiving. However, just “doing well” is not enough for owner Jerry Jones, the team itself, or the fans.

With that being said, there’s really no telling how the Cowboys will do during their November 28 game.

The Cowboys started out their season hot, going 3-0 against the New York Giants, Washington Redskins, and Miami Dolphins while averaging more than 32 points per game.

However, over the next three games, the Cowboys dropped their scoring averages below 19 ppg in losses to the New Orleans Saints, Green Bay Packers, and New York Jets.

In their most recent game, an October 20 matchup against the NFC East rival Philadelphia Eagles, the Cowboys scored 37 points to blow out the Eagles in Arlington.

The Cowboys could be on the upswing again, but it may not last until Thanksgiving. Only time will tell if Dallas will be consistently bad or consistently good. Otherwise, they could be doomed to have their first sub-.500 season since 2015.

Thanksgiving Day betting lines are not yet available. However, based on the Super Bowl betting odds currently up on Bovada, the Cowboys (+1600) could be favorites against the Bills (+5000).

Of course, when the NFL sets its schedule every offseason, the league typically tries to ensure that the Turkey Day slate won’t feature any actual turkeys on the field.

Sometimes that works out, and sometimes it doesn’t.

In reality, it’s usually pretty rare that all three games on the holiday slate will be blockbusters between league-leading superpowers. After all, try as the schedulers might – they, like sports bettors can all attest – understand that past performances do not guarantee future successes.

So far, barring a few major turnarounds over the next month, such appears to be the case this season.

Bears at Lions

Last season, the Bears had one of the top defenses in the league and went 12-4, while the Lions were underwhelming at 6-10. This season, the Bears are currently sitting at .500 (3-3) in the NFC North, while the Lions are dead last in the division at 2-3-1.

While both teams could have winning records going into their November 28 Thanksgiving football matchup, that seems unlikely to happen.

Between now and then, the Bears play the Chargers, Eagles, Lions, Rams, and Giants, and they could easily drop three of those five contests, putting them at 5-6.

Meanwhile, the Lions play the Giants, Raiders, Bears, Cowboys, and Redskins in the lead-up to Thursday’s big game, where they might be sitting at 4-6-1.

Bills at Cowboys

This matchup ought to be better than the first game of the day. The Bills went 6-10 in 2018, but this season, they’re sitting at 5-1 and have arguably the best defensive unit in the game not coached by Bill Belichick. The Cowboys, who went 10-6 last year, have regressed a bit, but they’re still a strong team with a prideful Thanksgiving record, and they’re leading the NFC East this season at 4-3.

By the time the two clubs meat on Fat Thursday, they should both be well above .500. Before their November 28 meeting, the Bills will play the Eagles, Redskins, Browns, Dolphins, and Broncos, and they could sweep the lot of them. But even with a loss in the mix, by Thanksgiving, Buffalo could easily be 10-2.

The Cowboys, on the other side of the equation, will play the Giants, Vikings, Lions, and Patriots, and they’re liable to split, putting them at 6-5 in time for their showdown with Buffalo.

Saints at Falcons

This is the primetime Thanksgiving game, and the NFL figured both teams would be bona fide powerhouses coming into the matchup. While the Saints are building on their 13-3 2018 record with more of the same at 6-1 to start this season, the Falcons have – like birds are wont to do – laid an egg so far, going 1-6 (after a less terrible 7-9 2018 campaign).  

Before they meet, the Saints will play the Cardinals, Falcons, Buccaneers, and Panthers, which means there’s a strong chance they’ll go into their rematch with the Dirty Birds at 10-1.

The Falcons’ schedule between now and Turkey Day is less forgiving, as they take on the Seahawks, Saints, Panthers, and Buccaneers. They might lose all these matchups, but even if they win half of them, they’ll still be 3-8.  

So there you have it.
